Event: Singapore Street Festival: DJ Party 2006,
Jrock / Cosplay Event
Location: Youth Park, Orchard
Date: 11 June 2006
Report by: Tim Wong
Entourage: Tim Wong, Sin Zhonghao, Wilson Tan
11 June 2006 was the DJ Party (Street Festival held at the Youth
Park) of 2006; each year seems to get better and bigger. 2 years
ago, I believe it wasn't even half as big, although Yun did mentioned
that she liked the earlier Street Festivals.
I'm not really a fan of Jrock, although there are a few songs from
NANA (Mika Nakashima; although she's not really considered Jrock
though) and Luna Sea that I like. I'm there more for the fashion
though; I've always liked Gothic Lolita fashion since years ago
(like I mentioned before it must be evil Chobits which influenced
me). Thanks to Steve who invited us in 2004, both me and Hao have
become fans of the event every year. If you compared Street Festival,
EOY and Cosfest, I probably like Street Festival the most, and it
is one of my most anticipated events of each year.
There was a particular band that played Yui Makino's "You are my
Love" that kinda shocked me. I'm a big fan of Yui Makino, but she's
a really new artist and not quite well known. She makes some really
nice songs, although she has a little of the schoolgirl wail that
not many people might like. Speaking of which, there was another
band (but both me & Hao dislike the male lead due to his criticism
of other bands) with a female lead for 2 songs with a wailing schoolgirl
voice. I was kinda surprised when I heard it, because it's not something
that you would expect during DJ Party. I figured that many people
might be irritated with her voice, but I found rather amusing and
nice though. She almost reminds me of Ai Otsuka and Nino from Round
Table.
Oh yeah, it was my birthday on 10 June, and many thanks to Black
Parasol who gave their birthday wishes during the event.
It was raining heavily when I reached there, and that kinda spoilt
the mood. Even Hao mentioned that I was a little grouchy during
the beginning of the event. Space is constraint and you have to
stand, and to add to it; no place to take pictures. It's was a good
thing that the rain stopped around 5+, and then the photographers
all started appearing and everyone started walking around taking
pictures. An apparent case of the tipping point at work. The moment
the rain hits a certain low level of drizzling, social behaviour
radically changes.
Our moods started to get a lot better after that. After all, pictures
grab a memory, and we love using pictures as a tool for that. Alright,
that's a lot of talk, so let's move on to the pictures. The human
mind is very quick to drop memories, unless artificially provoked
by tools such as pictures and blogs. Anyway, I purposely made the
pictures bigger than usual.
Black Parasol. They all looked very nice. I wanted to talk to Hui
a little more, but I didn't really get the chance though. Many thanks
to Yun who keep bugging me with cookies and chips. Jessica looks
very natural and nice in this picture too. They have a lot of nice
stuff with fantastic prices, so if you didn't buy anything from
them then, make SURE you get something from them the next time.
I heard you girls worked hard for this event; great work on that.
Zer0 / Jingnah. Her outfit looked fantastic too. She was very gutsy
to go onto stage to talk a little regarding her booth; really cool.
Wingz. I recognize her because I remember she cosplayed as Sousei
Seki during EOY05, where a friend of hers mentioned that her sleeves
were too long and knocked many things of her own booth down. Maybe
that's why she wore a bustier/halter dress. She was also one of
the few girls that we started talking to initially and taking pictures
of, and I definitely would NOT forget the amount of eyes staring
at us while we were conversing, getting her name card(s) and snapping
pictures. It almost felt as though these people wanted to kill me
or something. Maybe the rest of the guys were just envious, but
that's just my gutsy nature. ^^
Very friendly and nice girl. Left an impression on me not just
because she's pretty, but rather because of the happiness aura that
she emitted. Everyone emits a certain type of aura; I hope mine
is a good one too.
Hao and myself took a short break to Cineleisure to get a drink,
and I requested for a picture of these 2 girls. However, I dropped
my camera right in front of them! Later when we headed back to the
Youth Park, I requested for a picture of them, not remembering they
were the ones and they told me that I had already taken a shot.
I was pondering since when did I took a picture until I looked through
my camera.... it was them at Cineleisure where my camera had dropped!
No wonder they remembered me. So embarassing. :D
Anyway, I like her top (girl on right), especially with those
big sleeves near the wrist area.

Ah, this girl is cute. I like her outfit and her tiny ponytails
that fall from behind her ears around her shoulders.

Zhonghao's favourite, Reiko. She was the same girl that Zhonghao
took pictures with during EOY05, where she cosplayed as the empress
of the Methuselah from Trinity Blood.

I love her arm warmers.

I just had to grab her out for a shot. Friendly girl who later requested
me and Hao for a picture. I was quite surprised because we were
requested for pictures 2 times, and it's not something that happens
commonly to guys, considering so many guys were dressed pretty similarly.
Kudos to Hao for this.

Cute Lolita that we had trouble getting pictures of. She was embarassed
at us requesting for a shot, and the moment we asked successfully,
another group of photographers just started jumping in and pointing
cameras. It's as if we did the dirty job. She even turned away from
the camera when too many were pointing at her; I guess probably
not too used to it which was probably the reason why she was in
the crowd most of the time.
.jpg)
Another brighter shot of the lolita. I like her ribbons at the back
of her dress and her ponytails.
.jpg)
Her costume and make-up are very nice! It was pretty hard to find
a chance to request for a shot though.
.jpg)
Another 2 lolitas who embarassingly refused for a shot initially
(probably afraid of cameras), but later allowed us for pictures.
I only got rejected for pictures 3 times in the last 2 years...
and 2 times were from yesterday! My goodness. Perhaps that's the
price to pay for being the first to ask for any shots.
.jpg)
Nice ribbon and bear. I really like that ajar ribbon.

Just look at happy Hao. Gentle reminder to Hao: she's really cute
but super underaged. She did attract a lot of attention to cameras
though. I think the colours of this picture is extremely nice. I
like the overall effect. Very vibrant colours with no overhues of
skin tones.
.jpg)
I love the vibrant colours of my camera. All pictures here are unleveled
and unedited (apart from resizing); they just come out from the
camera. Amazing Ixus.

Evil Hao and Yun. I just realised I forgot to take a picture together
with Hui, Yun, Jingnah and Jessica.
.jpg)
Very expensive dress (left). From Baby, the Stars Shine Bright.
I recognized it from the heart shaped prints and frills, and the
high quality materials of the dress.

Julia. It been eons since I last saw her.

Julia, Miwitch & AngelZhou.
.jpg)
I managed to grab Wingz out for a shot. Kudos to Hao once again.
Surprisingly, we're about the same height. I thought she might be
taller than me.
.jpg)
Yun, Kaori & Shaoyang (Kudos to Kaori on this).
.jpg)
Hao and myself. Kudos to Wilson who took this for us. It's a little
overexposed; that's the problem with cameras of my class (Ixus)
as the flashes are typically not as good. My previous A70 produced
better flash pictures. My current Ixus 60 has the problem of both
under and overexposing of flash shots, but is extremely capable
of day shots.
.jpg)
Massive kudos to Hao on this picture, as it was pretty hard to ask
this Lolita for a shot due to her shy nature. I still like her response
of: "Errm... me ah?" which I found it pretty amusing.
.jpg)
Hehe, Hao looks so fierce here. He looks better when he smiles;
in fact, I think we all look better when we smile. Another bubbly
girl who readily accepted Hao's request.

Stuff that I bought from Black Parasol & Jingnah. Total damage:
$79. I love that crown. I hope sales were good for both of them!
Overall, the Street Festival was a blast, and it was a pity that
Roy did not join us.
The community is getting bigger, and it is definitely a nice thing.
I must commend on Jun, who was the organizer of this event, and
still had to do to play for the closing. If I remember correctly,
Defuse is the band's name, and their playing is really good. Kudos
also to the sound people, which I felt that overall the tweaked
sound was pretty good and balanced. No weird highpass/lowpass frequencies,
with good balances of bass (I personally hate tight bass), mids
and trebles. Monitor on the mics were also pretty well balanced.
I thank everyone who made this event possible, all the people
who gave me permission to take pictures of and with, booth owners
who came early to sell merchandise as well as the good dosage of
Jrock music for all to appreciate.
I'm already looking forward to next year's Street Festival. Totemo
Tanoshi-kata.
